King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC) has introduced the first Mobile Stroke Ambulance Unit in the Middle East and North Africa, offering advanced medical care to stroke patients during critical early stages. This innovative approach aims to significantly improve patient outcomes by delivering life-saving treatment directly at the scene, reducing long-term disabilities and increasing the chances of a full recovery.
The initiative, launched in Riyadh, is designed to tackle the challenges of traffic congestion and long transport times that often delay access to hospital care. Stroke is a major health issue globally and is the third leading cause of death in Saudi Arabia. The first hour after the onset of stroke symptoms is crucial, as timely intervention can dramatically improve recovery and reduce the risk of long-term impairment. By equipping an ambulance with the latest medical technology and specialist staff, KFSHRC’s Mobile Stroke Unit is able to offer immediate diagnosis and treatment, increasing the likelihood of a positive outcome by up to 70%.
Once the Saudi Red Crescent Authority receives a report of stroke symptoms—such as arm weakness, facial drooping, or speech difficulties—the Mobile Stroke Unit is deployed. On arrival, the unit’s specialised team, which includes a vascular neurologist, critical care nurse, paramedic, and a CT scan technician, begins diagnosis on-site. The ambulance is equipped with advanced imaging technology, allowing for brain tissue and blood vessel scans to be conducted before the patient even reaches the hospital. This enables the medical team to determine the type of stroke and begin treatment during transport.
Speaking on the initiative, a spokesperson from KFSHRC highlighted the importance of rapid intervention in stroke cases, noting that the Mobile Stroke Unit is designed to “bring the hospital to the patient.” The aim is to save valuable time in the treatment process, which could be critical in preventing long-term disabilities and improving the quality of life for stroke survivors.
Visitors to the Global Health Exhibition in Riyadh have had the opportunity to explore the Mobile Stroke Unit, which features cutting-edge medical technologies such as CT scans, MRI, carotid artery ultrasound, and cerebral angiography. This exhibition showcases KFSHRC’s leading role in providing novel healthcare solutions in the region.
Stroke occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is disrupted, either by a clot or the rupture of a blood vessel, leading to brain damage. While stroke can affect anyone, including children, certain risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and smoking increase the likelihood of occurrence. The Mobile Stroke Unit represents a major step forward in addressing this critical health issue in Saudi Arabia.
