Healthcare leaders from 16 NHS trusts gathered at the House of Commons this week to explore a new, innovative app transforming how NHS staff access critical patient care information. Developed by Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, the MyStaff app uses artificial intelligence (AI) and automation to streamline access to policies and procedures, saving staff valuable time in the process.

The app has already seen impressive uptake, with over 12,000 staff members enrolled and around 1,000 using it daily. The system has reduced the time spent searching for vital information from nearly 10 minutes to less than 30 seconds, significantly improving efficiency within the Trust.

The event, which was hosted by David Burton-Sampson, the MP for Southend West and Leigh, also featured key speakers and technology experts who shared insights into how digitisation can benefit healthcare operations. With £2 billion pledged to digitise the NHS and reduce waiting lists, time-saving technologies like MyStaff are now a key focus of healthcare’s digital transformation agenda.

Matthew Hopkins, Chief Executive of Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, kicked off the session by emphasising the importance of integrating digital tools into healthcare practices. “Our Trust is working to make the best use of digital technologies wherever this can help staff provide the best possible care to our patients,” he said. “The MyStaff app is a versatile and easy-to-use tool that enhances our governance processes and ensures staff can access the clinical information they need quickly and efficiently.”

The MyStaff app was developed in collaboration with digital innovators Diligram, whose technology supports the management of policies and documents across the Trust. Since its implementation, document compliance rates have risen dramatically from 60% to 98%. Projections show that the app could free up 55,000 hours of staff time over the next three years, equating to nearly £4 million in staff costs. This time-saving benefit will allow NHS staff to focus more on patient-facing care, further enhancing service delivery.

Leslie Golding, CEO of Diligram, praised the partnership with Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust. “We have worked closely with the Trust to develop groundbreaking technology that supports healthcare professionals by simplifying access to essential information,” he said. “We’re proud to be part of this brilliant example of positive digital change.”

The app’s success marks a significant step towards the wider adoption of digital solutions across the NHS, with the potential to improve operational efficiency and patient care. By simplifying the management of vital documentation, MyStaff not only ensures that staff are working with the most up-to-date information but also frees up time and resources that can be better utilised in direct patient care.

As the NHS continues to embrace technology to improve services, initiatives like MyStaff are proving to be vital in the journey toward a more efficient, effective healthcare system.
