Women More Diligent with Oral Hygiene, Study Finds

New research suggests women are more consistent with their oral hygiene routines than men, visiting dentists more frequently and brushing their teeth more regularly.

A study by independent research firm IQS, commissioned by oral care brand Oclean, found significant differences between genders in dental habits. Women were less likely to forget to brush their teeth and replaced their toothbrush or sonic brush heads more frequently than men.

Women More Committed to Oral Care

The study revealed that only 33% of women occasionally skip brushing their teeth in the evening, and 22% in the morning. Among men, the numbers were higher, with 45% admitting to missing their night-time brushing and 37% in the morning.

This consistency extends to toothbrush maintenance, with 65% of women replacing their toothbrush or sonic brush head every three months, compared to just 44% of men.

Fresh Breath and Aesthetics Matter More to Women

Women were also found to prioritise oral hygiene for aesthetic reasons, with a strong focus on fresh breath and the confidence that comes with a bright smile. They visit the dentist more frequently for preventive check-ups, reinforcing their commitment to maintaining oral health.

    Men Prefer Functionality Over Design

When selecting a toothbrush, men and women also had different priorities. Women were more likely to choose ergonomic designs and softer bristles, with 75% preferring a brush that balances effectiveness with gum protection. Men, on the other hand, focused on durability, quality, and price, often looking for toothbrushes with advanced technological features.

Smart Technology for Better Oral Hygiene

Despite these differences, both men (79%) and women (87%) agreed on the benefits of a high-tech toothbrush such as the Oclean X Ultra.

Designed to cater to different brushing habits, the Oclean X Ultra sonic toothbrush features AI-powered voice guidance and a TurboClean algorithm to improve brushing techniques. It also includes a pressure warning system, which lights up red if excessive force is applied, helping to protect gums from damage.

    Ensuring Effective Brushing

The Oclean X Ultra offers real-time feedback, alerting users to switch brushing zones and advising them to slow down if they are brushing too quickly. The device’s MAGLEV 3.0 motor delivers up to 84,000 movements per minute, which Oclean claims removes 70% more plaque than standard models.

A built-in six-axis gyroscope analyses brushing patterns and provides post-brushing feedback on eight different areas of the mouth. The toothbrush is also equipped with a FlexiFit brush head, designed to reach difficult areas for a thorough clean.

Available at a recommended retail price of €129.90, the Oclean X Ultra S aims to provide an optimal balance between efficiency, technology, and gum protection.
