A major step forward in Malaysia’s fight against online fraud has been announced with a partnership between MY E.G. Services Berhad (MYEG) and MyDigital ID Solutions Sdn Bhd (MYIDSSB). The collaboration aims to create a blockchain-powered national digital identity ecosystem through the MyDigital ID Superapp.
The platform, built on the Malaysia Blockchain Infrastructure, seeks to provide a secure and seamless digital identity management system for businesses and commercial service providers. Developed under MIMOS, Malaysia’s national research and development agency, the MyDigital ID Superapp is designed to enhance digital security and streamline operations for users and businesses alike.
The initiative is timely, aligning with calls across China-ASEAN ministerial events for interoperable digital standards and blockchain-based identity verification systems. These measures are seen as crucial in tackling the rising tide of cybercrime and online fraud in Southeast Asia.
MYEG, through its Zetrix blockchain network, brings extensive experience to the project, offering interoperability with various digital ID systems, including those used in China and the global World ID network. This capability ensures the MyDigital ID platform is not only scalable within Malaysia but also effective for cross-border transactions.
Boost for Businesses
The MyDigital ID Superapp aims to simplify digital identity management for businesses by providing an integrated solution. Companies will be able to use the national digital ID for secure logins or host services as miniapps within the Superapp. This approach eliminates the need for multiple authentication systems, streamlining customer onboarding and reducing operational costs.
The platform’s focus on privacy and security is central to its design. Data interactions will occur directly between users and service providers, with the Superapp functioning solely as an enabling platform. It will neither store nor access personal information, ensuring compliance with strict privacy regulations.
Tackling Cybercrime
Malaysia has faced significant challenges from cybercrime, with financial losses from scams amounting to RM54.02 billion (£9.3 billion) in 2023, equivalent to 3% of the country’s GDP. Across Southeast Asia, scammers stole an estimated £30 billion last year, with a marked rise in AI-driven crimes.
By integrating blockchain and AI technologies into the national digital ID system, the MyDigital ID Superapp aims to bolster security and reduce the risk of fraud. It also promises to modernise the country’s digital infrastructure, supporting Malaysia’s broader digital transformation goals.
MYEG CEO Dato’ Fadzli Shah highlighted the importance of the initiative: “This platform will simplify access to digital services while maintaining the highest standards of data security and user privacy. It will also unlock new opportunities for businesses in the digital age.”
The development and proof of concept for the MyDigital ID Superapp are expected to be completed by early 2025. Both MYEG and MYIDSSB have emphasised a phased approach to implementation, ensuring that the platform integrates smoothly with existing systems.
This partnership between public and private sectors represents a significant move toward enhancing Malaysia’s digital resilience and addressing the growing threats posed by cybercrime.
