A recent survey by VinciWorks has unveiled significant gaps in emergency preparedness within UK workplaces, despite nearly half of respondents reporting that they have personally encountered an emergency situation at work. Conducted among 202 HR and compliance professionals, the survey highlights a pressing need for organisations to enhance their preparedness measures in the face of increasing workplace emergencies.
Among the alarming findings, 49% of respondents admitted to having experienced an emergency at work, underscoring the unpredictability of such events. From the recent robbery at a London jewellery store to surging levels of shoplifting and protests disrupting city centres, emergencies in the workplace are becoming more frequent and diverse.
Despite the apparent risks, many organisations appear ill-prepared. The survey reveals a concerning lack of testing for emergency response plans. Specifically, 21% of participants disclosed that their emergency plans had never been tested, while 27% reported that any tests conducted occurred more than six months ago.
“The law is clear on emergency preparedness,” stated Naomi Grossman, Learning Manager and compliance expert at VinciWorks. “Employers have a fundamental responsibility to ensure a safe work environment for their staff that can handle any crisis. This includes conducting thorough risk assessments and developing actionable emergency response plans that are regularly tested. Having a plan on paper isn’t enough; it needs to be practised and ingrained so everyone knows how to react effectively in a crisis.”
Grossman emphasised that emergencies are not merely hypothetical events but inevitable occurrences that can strike any workplace. “While the nature of these events can vary by industry, all workplaces face some level of risk,” she explained. “By investing in proper training and regularly testing response plans, organisations can ensure everyone is prepared to react effectively in a crisis, minimising harm and safeguarding employee safety.”
In response to these challenges, VinciWorks has developed scenario-driven eLearning courses aimed at bridging the emergency response training gap. These courses equip employees with the knowledge and skills necessary to handle emergencies effectively, covering a range of topics from fire safety to active shooter response.
The survey results serve as a wake-up call for organisations across the UK to reassess their emergency preparedness strategies.
